McDonald's, Old Navy, Nike, and Reebok are just some of the companies trying out new hip hop-themed marketing campaigns and product lines. But one of the strangest industries to use hip hop product lines is the toy industry.
A quick Google reveals some strange things, like a Snoop Dogg action figure or a hip hop board game. But these are only fringe developments, likely produced by unknown companies with little clout in the industry. What is coming to light is much more serious than this.
Exhibit A. Mattel's new "Flavas" dolls. One part fashionable Barbie dolls a la "Bratz," one part rap music video. The harsh street lifestyle that Mattel is portraying here is probably not the greatest thing for young girls to be emulating.
Exhibit B. McDonald's "I'm Loving It," or should I say, "i'm lovin' it," advertising campaign. They aren't really the toy industry, but they bundle toys with happy meals and kids go there. The ads have kids happily singing along with a rapper who isn't actually singing, rather rapping.
Exhibit C. This is just too horrible. See for yourself.
